Genting Palace (Non-Halal) is a majestic Chinese restaurant located in Genting Grand Hotel, just next to the Genting International Showroom where we would watch all the magic shows.
I was in Genting Highlands for a Chinese New Year Food Review, let’s check out what’s on offer for the CNY Season. The CNY Menu is really really extensive if you check out their website, I will be reviewing certain dishes that was prepared by Executive Chef Jacky Yap. The restaurant is very long and I think can really fill a lot of diners. Still, Chef Jacky told us that it is always full house for lunch and dinner on normal days. The food must be fantastic if the diners are willing to line up just to eat here. We were doing our review during tea time, thus the place was not full of people.
Tables are big and can seat 10 people comfortably. Table setting is simple and clean.
We start the meal with the Lucky Salmon Yee Sang (RM138 L)
I like it, it’s quite nice after adding the sauces. I always love raw salmon, the more the merrier.
Tossing Yee Sang is always fun, and really meaningful for CNY. Tossing out the bad and bringing in the good for the new Monkey Year.
Traditional Chinese always start the meal with soup, we too had the Double-Boiled Chicken Soup with American Ginseng (RM68 per pax). Yes we get our individual portions. The soup was really tasty and there was a large piece of minced chicken inside.
I love the soup but didn’t get to finish the chicken. We tried to guess how the chef made the chicken to be so soft, thinking maybe he added egg but in fact, it was purely chicken meat. I love ginseng taste in the soup though, I feel energetic just drinking this.
Herbal soup is really great for our health, very nutritious you know, must drink once a while.
Next we had the Braised Pork Knuckle & Baby Abalone with Sea Moss and Sea Cucumber (RM298 per order). This is one of my fav dish. I have not had Sea Moss since I was little, so this dish so brings back the memories of CNY reunion dinner at home. Also the Baby Abalone, is really quite large piece.
I also love broccoli and mushrooms and sea cucumber, this being our only dish with vegetable too.
Another meat dish, Steamed and Baked Mountain Chicken with Chinese Herbs and Red Dates (RM168 per order). My, I think you can only get mountain chicken here in Genting right? The chicken was really big, I was asking the others, what is this, this is like Village Chicken, yet it is not thin but big. So now I know why.
Anyways, this is like paper wrapped in salt and steamed with herbs, really tasty, the soup is very strong in herbal taste. The meat is soft, a very traditional dish I think can suit anyone’s taste easily.
The Pan-Fried River King Praens Vietnam Style is possibly the star dish of the night. It was so beautifully presented in the caramel ‘cage’ with King Prawns inside. The prawns are huge by the way.
A hot sweet sauce was served together, and if the sauce is hot enough, it will melt the caramel cage and slowly open to reveal the prawns.
The prawns are mouthwateringly good, I wish I had more but the portion of this dish is not too large. It had a sweet and sourish taste to the sauce used. Prawns were really fresh too. It was my first time eating this type of King Prawns.
Finally, we have the stewed Preserved Meat with Arrowhead Fried Rice (RM45 per order). As usual, not a rice person, I liked the lap chiong, a kind of sausage, quite an interesting combo of ingredients here.
Quite a staple food in every CNY set meal. Taste wise is ok for me, as long as it is not too salty.
Finally we have desserts, and we were served the Chilled Creamy Green Tea Cake (RM26 per order) and this is really delicious. I love green tea so I can’t help but love this, the texture is more like a pudding but a harder type, so not really a cake that is baked as we know it. The green tea taste is really fragrant like Jasmine tea perhaps. Love this.
There are other versions, like the Red Bean Chilled Cake…I like this too, as I love red bean, I think having this and the green tea together side by side would be a real kick.
Then there is the Osmanthus Cake or Kwai Fah Gou 桂花糕. This one looks really pretty but it has the least taste compared to the other two. I wish it was a little mroe fragrant, but yet this is great if you want something light without the creamy texture.
Many thanks to Chef Jacky Yap for his hospitality as he sat with us bloggers and explained many things about the dishes in detail.
A group pic with all the bloggers and thanks to our Genting PR Eric Moo for the arrangement and time spent with us.
