The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will continue to dazzle fans of classical music when it presents a startling all-Russian musical works on Friday, 30 September 2016 and Saturday, 1 October 2016 at 8.30 p.m. at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC.
The MPO will open the concerts with Rimsky-Korsakov’s rousing Russian Easter Overture, Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme and will close the showcases with Shostakovich’s ode to the horrors of war, Symphony No.8 in C minor. It is a symphony that spoke of tragedy and the bitter sufferings that comes in its wake. The one-hour work was premiered in 1943 by the State Symphony Orchestra in Russia.
Renowned Russian conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy returns to the DFP podium after showcasing his musical brilliance to our audience in 1998 (with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra), 2000 (the Philharmonia Orchestra), 2009 (the Sydney Symphony Orchestra), and with the MPO in 2002 and 2014. Other prominent orchestras that he has collaborated include the NHK Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, among others.
Ashkenazy builds his extensive recording catalogue with releases such as the 1999 Grammy award-winning Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues, Bach’s Wohltemperierte Klavier and Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. 2013 saw the release of ‘Ashkenazy: 50 Years on Decca’ – a 50-CD box-set celebrating his long-standing relationship with the label, a milestone collection of his vast catalogue of Rachmaninov’s piano music. 2016 saw the release of his latest album, Shostakovich’s Piano Trios Nos.1 and 2, and Viola Sonata on Decca.
The MPO concerts will also feature cellist Li-Wei Qin. In addition to these showcases, Li-Wei will hold his own recital themed Cello Showdown on Sunday, 2 September 2016 at 3.00 p.m. with the MPO cello section. The programme will include engaging cello works composed by Piazzolla, Rossini, Villa-Lobos, Bartok and Bach.
Be caught up in rapture with these music offerings, only at DFP!
