I grew up reading Sarawak Tribune. Although having moved out of the state many years ago and preferring The Star now, it is still sad to read about its demise. There are already only two mainstream English dailies from Sarawak, so now alternatives for local news seemed even more scarce for Sarawakians.
I can just imagine the horror of those who work there, the editor in question, who for one day was busy creating news for the masses, and the next being put out of work. Nonetheless, I’m sure every one involved was sorry it happened the way it did.
As much as I would to like shout why all these over a cartoon, I’m also glad our PM made that decision. It remains Malaysia’s culture to make peace and not fan the fire, and I guess by shutting down the paper, justice is served for many who are hurt. Is it better to demand free speech, or better to compromise your ideologies for the sack of respect for others in order to achieve peace for the majority of all? Definitely the latter. It is a wise decision indeed.
Let’s hope peace will prevail over violence and let Malaysians show the world there is always a better option when faced with such delicate issues.
