The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will present its ever popular Family Fun Day series with two shows on Saturday, 13 May 2018 at 2.30 pm and 4.30 pm at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC.
Together with conductor/presenter Kevin Hathway, the MPO, an ensemble of bowed strings, brass, woodwind and percussion instruments, will engage the audience to ‘build a band’ via an exciting programme; the light and bouncy Anderson’s Fiddle Faddle highlights the brilliance of the string instruments, Rutter’s Suite Lyrique demonstrates the different moods and amazing soundscapes, ragged Botsford’s Black And White Rag calls for a great dexterity from the pianist, and Abreu’s exotic Tico-Tico emulates the image of a bird that flits and sweeps as it enjoys its meal.
Also included in the repertoire list are Offenbach’s physically demanding dance Can-Can and soundtracks from Pirates of the Caribbean and Ladies In Lavender.
A familiar face to the audience at DFP, Hathway co-devised the current Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music percussion syllabus and very much enjoyed being a generalist examiner for 10 years. As an animator, he has presented many concerts in the USA and UK. His unique micro-orchestra, Albert’s Band, is a group that specializes in family and school projects and is the resident outreach ensemble at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
