This weekend, the Chinese community in Malaysia will be celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival and one of the traditions of this festival in our country is to savour some mooncakes with chinese tea with the family while watching the moon which will be at it’s brightest on this day. Usually, we will also give out mooncakes to friends and family whether store bought or home made ones. This year, I get to try D’King’s Premium Vegetarian Snow Skin Musang King Durian Mooncakes! What a mouthful! It doesn’t get anymore Malaysian and localised than this, it is mooncake but it is also Durian! Let me tell you why this mooncake will surprise anyone that you are gifting it to.
Firstly the packaging is quite beautiful, it comes with this white and gold lettered paper bag, and in it I have two boxes of Mooncakes, four pieces in each box. Now please remember that the durian in the mooncake is frozen and fresh type, it is really prepared with the actual durian flesh, the Musang King type sourced from Pahang, according to the Simon Chin the founder.
The boxes come in the same design as the paper bag, simple and beautiful and classy in gold.
Sliding the cardboard box open, I found that the box is actually a styrofoam box, it is so that the mooncakes can remain cold inside for up to 10 hours while travelling. What was more pleasantly surprising was….
..when I opened it, there was actually an ice pack inside! This gave me the confidence that I can buy and get the mooncakes delivered to me without it melting by the time it arrived!
The mooncakes were individually packed, four to a box. To store, it is recommended to keep it frozen, and then just thaw it at room temp for 15 min before eating. Else you can eat it frozen like I did which made it taste like ice cream. It is best not to refreeze up to three times if it was already thawed, best practice is to never refreeze what was thawed.
Once I opened the package, I could smell the durian immediately that permeated the air. So please don’t open and eat this on a flight or in the hotel room!
Even while frozen, it was really easy to cut through the snow skin. I usually like to cut into quarters to serve.
“Another unique feature is its delicate snow skin that is light-textured yet uniquely bouncy. The snow skin also has to be thin enough to emphasize the filling but strong enough to hold it all in. The snow skin is made from a secret recipe which we have created after many rounds of trials. Our pastry chef has nearly a decade of experience behind him and he is extremely particular about perfecting the taste,†said Simon Chin.
I love the texture of both the durian filling as well as the snow skin, it was really soft and smooth and light without the heaviness, the mooncake is also not that big, so it’s small enough to eat one per person during my tea break. Yum. The durian filling is exactly the way I love it, it is just like eating blended cold durian. I used to buy tubs of durian flesh and keep it in the freezer, and take a few out to eat everytime.
