You’re be wrong if you think this story is just about whales, it’s actually about all kinds of cetaceans and it’s totally educational, even for me. Although the apps is for ages 5-10, my 3 year old loved it, as he loves whales and had been watching lots of Cat the Hat Comes Back on Disney Junior. The story is quite captivating and it brings the readers on a whale watching tour which on the way, they also meet lots of other mammals like dolphins, porpoises in various species.

In between, there is even a little game that teaches your little one the difference between a dolphin and a porpoise, which I admit, I didn’t even know before this. As with any science subject, there are some BIG words inside this app and for the sake of the parents who need to explain to their young kids, the app allows me to click on the bold words for the meaning of it. For eg, for Echolocation, this came out when I clicked on it.

This book is priced higher than some others because it’s pretty long. You might not be able to finish it in one read, for the kids that is. I really liked it a lot myself as I actually learned there are some very unique whales with mouths that are like beaks, and some with really sharp noses. I thought all whales are huge but it seems not all are. As usual with all Oceanhouse ebook apps, it is totally interactive and you can click anywhere and something will happen. Click on the sky, and the word sky will appear. Click on something you’re not sure what it is, and a word will appear to tell you. Very good for parents with inquisitive kids, as we don’t have to say, er, I don’t know what is that.

I love that I will have many good years to use this app with Josiah, until he can truly read on his own, I believe he will love it even more. You can get the app here.

In the meantime, Oceanhouse also has two free Bookshelf apps. For Dr. Seuss books, there is this one and today, a new one is launched for all other Oceanhouse Media books, and it’s called the OM Bookshelf. The bookshelves are like iBooks in that all your downloaded apps can be launched from one place, instead of having it all over your iPad and iPhone.
