Smart Speller is an app for children just starting to learn how to spell. It mixes the fun of colours with spelling and beautiful graphics with a little bit of story line. The story is basically about the sun feeling sad because his jug doesn’t have any colours. So as kids successfully managed to spell a word. a little bit of colour is added to the jug. At the end, when all the colours are added, a rainbow will appear as a reward. It does take quite long to achieve that. The graphics are awesome and it is divided into 7 categories according to the rainbow colours, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet, each catergory representing numbers, vegetables, vehicles, fruits, animals, shapes and lastly body parts. So kids are not just learning how to spell, indirectly they are learning about colours of the rainbow, and different words in all those above mentioned categories. I absolutely love the graphics inside the categories, they are colourful and shiny and not too cartoony, they are actually very realistically drawn.

As for learning phase, it’s divided into easy, medium and hard levels. For Easy, your kid just need to drag and match the letters as the hint is shown. For Medium, the letter is not shown so unless they really know how to spell what the picture is showing, it will be rather challenging. For Hard, an additional letter that is not in the word is added to the tiles, so it gets a little harder. I love that it has 3 levels, so it makes this app last longer.

This is a video of Josiah trying out the app. He managed to spell on his own pretty much. When I started filming he had already gone through quite a few words indicated by the tick. There’s also a lite version of the app for parents to try out with their kids. Available in Android too.

I like that the drag and drop motion is very realistic. 2 Thumbs up for another great educational app that can be used from 1 year to 10 year olds.
