The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) continues to nurture an appreciation towards classical music in an upcoming concert on Saturday, 8 February 2025 at 8.00 pm at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC.
This concert will present two compositions by Antonín Dvo?ák, both ranked among the most famous of their kind. They are Cello Concerto in B minor and Symphony No.9 in E minor (known as From The New World). Themed Dvo?ák Double, the MPO will be led by Junichi Hirokami in his first concert as the orchestra’s Music Director.
The MPO will open the concert with Cello Concerto, a work premiered in 1896 by the London Philharmonic and conducted by Dvo?ák himself. A concerto that brims with melodic invention of the highest order, its performance will witness the debut of Colombian cello virtuoso Santiago Cañón-Valencia on the DFP stage with the MPO. Born in Bogota in 1995, he has garnered prestigious awards such as BBC Next Generation Artist in 2022 and a Silver Medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019.
A prolific artist/composer/commissioner, Cañón-Valencia has demonstrated his music calibre in Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, performing with conductors Julian Rachlin and Holly Mathieson, and orchestras such as the Phoenix Symphony, Nova Scotia Symphony, Danish Chamber Orchestra and Belgrade Philharmonic. In 2024, he celebrated the 100th birthday of cellist Janos Starker in Korea and Japan. To date, he has four commercial albums under his belt.
After an intermission, the MPO will close the concert with Symphony No.9 – From The New World, one of the most famous 19th century symphonies. It received its premiere in New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1893. A poem written by Longfellow titled The Song of Hiawatha and the American Indians’ dance inspired parts of this symphony, resulting in energetic and exhilarating movements with melodic inventiveness. This is a symphony that should not be missed by true music lovers!
Join the MPO in a music celebration which will resonate senses and bring you to an unforgettable music splendour, only at DFP!
Note: there will be a cello masterclass with Cañón-Valencia on Friday, 7 February 2025 at 7.00 pm at DFP. Music enthusiasts can participate by calling or emailing the Box Office. Tickets are priced at RM25 (observer) and RM200 (performer).
