The concerts are part of the MPO’s 25th anniversary this year which celebrates glorious masterpieces from the classical music world.

Rachmaninoff’s works are known for their extravagant grandeur, unabashed appeal to the emotions, rapturous melodies, rich colours with powerful romantic surge. The MPO has curated a programme consisting of two exciting works; Symphony No.2 in E minor and Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor.

The Second Symphony has an unbroken run of popularity to this day; composed in 1907, it was written in Dresden during the composer’s escapism from Moscow. He led the premiere in St. Petersburg in 1908, followed by in Moscow and America in 1909, all to audiences’ enthusiastic responses.

The Piano Concerto No.2 is one of the most popular and romantic in the repertory. It was written at a time when Rachmaninoff had plunged into a deep melancholy. The score was dedicated to his doctor, Nicolai Dahl for his assistance throughout this period and Rachmaninoff himself became the soloist for the concerto’s premiere in 1901.
