It is a rare occasion when the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) collaborates with two Malaysian pianists in a concert. Hence, let’s join the MPO in a concert themed Piano Duo: A Celebration of Malaysian Talents featuring Foo Mei Yi and Ng Chong Lim on Saturday, 25 May 2024 at 8.30 pm at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC.
Winner of the 2013 BBC Music Magazine’s Best Newcomer award, Foo Mei Yi returns to DFP after her previous collaborations with the MPO in 2017. Recognised internationally as an innovative pianist with a diverse and eclectic repertoire, she has performed with London Philharmonic Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic and English Chamber Orchestra, and with illustrious list of collaborators including Matthias Bamert, Benjamin Zander, Janos Furst and Martyn Brabbins.
Ng Chong Lim has participated in many international festivals including in Seoul, Greece and Italy, and has also served as juror at international competitions. A keen composer, his works were premiered in countries such as Taiwan, Germany, the USA.
The MPO and the pianists will present Poulenc’s Concerto in D minor for Two Pianos, a work full of fun and verve, almost a romp. It contains traditional French qualities of wit, frivolity and brevity. It was written in 1932 and premiered that same year in Venice. Poulenc and his friend, Jacques Fevrier were the soloists.
MPO Resident Conductor, Gerard Salonga, will lead the MPO to open the concert with Rachmaninoff’s The Rock, a highly atmospheric work that takes its title from Mikhail Lermontov’s poem of the same name. It was premiered at Russian Music Society in Moscow in 1894.
The concert closes with Brahms’ Symphony No.1 in C minor, a different kind of listening experience, one that takes the listener on a deeply absorbing, 45-minute artistic journey from darkly turbulent beginnings to a triumphant conclusion. Brahms spent 20 years on this work, completing it in 1876. Its first performance took place in Karlsruhe, Germany, that year.
