Sarikei Bridge

Kuching city is divided into North and South by the Sarawak River with two different Local Councils, Sarikei being a rather small town is also divided into two parts separated by the Nyelong River. One is the actual town where all the markets, government offices, shops etc are, and the other part known as the village, where some local people build their houses there. It is also a road that links to Bintangor, the local short cut. It’s quite a fuss to travel to and fro these two parts for the local people. They have to take a ferry ride at the jetty. The kind of ferries for vehicles. Passengers have to pay toll for this ferry ride too.

Over the Chinese New Year hols, when all those living abroad comes back, the line to get on the ferry can get pretty long. At times we had to wait up to half and hour as only 2 ferries operate at one time. Past 7pm, only 1 ferry will operate.

Thus, it was really good news when we found they were building a concrete bridge to connect the two sides of Sarikei. Now, maybe they only thought of it prior to the Elections. After all the years…Hopefully, the bridge will be ready before CNY next year…
