Watching AVI movies on Windows Vista

Windows Vista is great in many ways, but problematic in many ways as well for regular XP users. Most downloaded movies are in .avi format, but Windows Media Player in Vista just wouldn’t play them. Well, it will play, but one will only hear the audio not the see the video. You can’t even burn the video to DVD using the Windows DVD Maker as when you do that, Vista will define the file as corrupted.

There is a workaround to this, and the answer is codec. With so many codecs out there, it will be hard to decide which ones actually worked..as there’s no uninstalling the codec once installed. My previous machine was pretty messed up with codecs I installed for this and that.

Windows Vista Codec Package
This is the codec I used, which I can say, worked for playing .avi movie files. I can’t say for others but this codec claim to be able to play AVI, FLV, MKV, MOD, MOV, MP4, MPG and Other Files. For details on what this codec can do, read here.

After installing the codec, I was able to watch my archives of movies, and also burn them to DVD using Windows DVD Maker. Gone are the days of using Nero, I actually don’t like Nero? I like the many menu styles in DVD Maker, and the ability to style your fonts, and add notes, which I use to add the synopsis. Ok, before you say anything, I do not make pirated DVDs for sale, I only burn to DVDs movies that cannot be found here, that never made its way to our airwaves. 🙂
