When I first saw Elma, she was a thin, ragged little kitten running around the streets at the Pasar Malam in Taman Sri Langat. It was chemistry at first site, and we looked and spied at her for the next few days while thinking whether we should adopt her. Elma was always active and not afraid of people. She runs around people’s legs in search for scraps.
One fine evening, we finally caught her, she ran in between us and the van and it was not easy catch. When I finally got her in my arms, she quieten down and did not scratch. Maybe she realised she will find a home. When we brought her to John’s house, she made herself at home immediately, ran around the couches and stuff like that.
Well, over two short years she grew up into a fine looking lady.
It was a joy to have her around as she loves to play and as she got older, she likes to be rubbed on her neck and she’d purr lots. She’s always up to some mischief, scratching carpets, lying on beds, but one of her favourite hobbies is climbing. Most times when we get home, she’s watching for us on the roof. She goes in and out of the house by climbing through our bathroom window.
She does make her habit known by even climbing bookshelves. Unfortunately, it was that habit that brought her to her end. On 9th Aug 2008, we were out for breakfast and Elma climbed the steel gate which we bought from our neighbours to replace our front gate, and somehow or other, the gate came crashing down and Elma died on the spot with her skull crushed. There were lots of blood by the time we were back, and Elma was already gone. We wrapped her in a towel and buried her near our house.
Elma is greatly missed in the house today. I used to come home to her begging to be fed and curling up at my feet as I lay on my sofa, now it’s all quiet. This is the last of my pet post for many years to come….
I’m so sorry to hear about elma.
i still remember how that cat always lies on the sofa when i visit (back when she was still staying with the guys)
Hi there, I feel for you. Think about the 5 years of great joy she has given you and all who have come in contact with Elma and I’m sure she’s jumping happily up there 🙂
I feel so bad for you and John. I also really like to play with Elma..
