Come next year, one-sen copper coins in Malaysia will become useless metal. Bank Negara has already made new ruling that we should bank in our one-sen (do we get anything in return?) and it will soon be boiled down to pure copper. I know the Star said that it was supposed to be useless only April 2008 onwards, but I had been hearing from various sources that it is by Jan 2008. Which is true?
In my humble opinion, I think this is a smart move. One-sen coins had always been something we try to get rid of from the wallet, and it’s such a fuss when retailers give you your change back in one-sens. In my mind, it’s like worthless money, that is worth more than it’s monetary value, which doesn’t make sense. It’s better to just get rid of it and make life in the future easier. Sure, the transition from with it to without can be a big readjustment and headache for everyone, especially those doing the accounts..but new things always come with complaints and problems. When it’s fully implemented, then everyone will get used to it.
I dig out some one-sen coins lying around in the drawer, and found 75 sen total. What do I do with it? Is it worth the time to even bank it in?
