Real Heroes

Heroes is a science fiction drama that has become so popular now since it was first shown, and now it’s coming to local TV Screens TV3 every Sundays at 9pm. A great news to those who missed it on Astro or to folks like us who never had Astro. I’m actually following the episodes as it is shown on NBC, I would have loved to share how I got my hands on them without using bittorrent, but now that people can get caught and persecuted just for posting links hosted externally by 3rd parties, I better not.

And so, I’ve just finished watching Ep 8 of season 2, and going into Ep 9, and I must say, Heroes is a brilliant show. It’s about a bunch of very ordinary folks, who realised one fine day, that they have heroic abilities, like bending time, flying, regenerating, immortality etc etc. There are two groups of people in this show, the good guys and the bad guys. The good guys try to save the world from destruction using their powers, while the bad ones just want to gain more powers and use it for their own good, they even want to wipe out others who have powers, something like ethnic cleansing. Well, it hasn’t come to that stage yet.

Some characters have desirable powers, some don’t. Especially the ones they haven’t found control over. These kinds of movies are fantasies, great entertainment. But I can’t help but think of real life heroes. People who are also ordinary, they may not be able to fly or go back in time, but with whatever they have in their heart and a little faith, they can create history. One such person I was thinking about was William Wilberforce. Well, I only got curious to read more of him after I saw the show, Amazing Grace.

Needless to say, this show never made it to our shores. But doesn’t mean you can’t get it ‘winks’. Anyways, William was an anti slavery activist in Britain in those days when slavery was ok. Due to his determination to abolish slave trade, today slavery is long gone and totally inhumane. I think William Wilberforce was the true hero in real life, for although he was sickly and all, eventually becoming addicted to opium, and being ordinary without superpowers, he was also willing to stick to his cause, which he said, was what God called him to do. Very inspiring…but yet, most of us humans if given a choice, still chooses to be one of those fantasy kind of heroes instead of a hero who do something real that can change the lives of millions and billions of people for generations. What is one thing you can contribute that can change the situation we are in today?
