P1 launches new ToGoâ„¢ plans

P1 just launched their P1 Mifi new ToGoâ„¢ plans featuring the new P1 Personal 4G WiFi : MF230 modem and the High Performance Personal 4G WiFi : MX230. I received the MF230 for review and get to use it for about 3 weeks. I collected the device last week and had been using it to browse on my PC at work and also on my iPhone while on the go for the last week.

Truth is, I’ve always wanted to try a MIFI device for the fact that it can connect my multiple devices without needing to depend on my limited 3g or when my device do not have 3g capability. Let me just explain how MIFI works. A MIFI device is like your home modem, just that it runs on battery and it is ridiculously small and light so it can be carried in your pocket or bag. It is really meant to be used outside the home and for this particular model, it can connect up to 5 devices at one go. Once it is turned on and the connection is established, the first light will be stable in green (excellent coverage), orange (ok so so coverage) or red (low coverage). Then your device will be able to search and detect the P1 modem. For mine it is detected with the default name of P14G-SPOT-1889FD and I will need to key in the WEP password found behind the device. So basically, a MIFI modem can create your own personal hotspot without having to connect with all the public around you, for eg. in cafes, malls, colleges etc where when many people are connected, the line will no doubt slow down.

At the moment, the P1 MF230 modem is free with sign up of their P1 Mifi ToGoâ„¢ plan for 24 months contract. Without the current promotion, it would have cost RM100 just for the modem. So at the moment, it’s free and only RM69 per month. Sign up online and there will be a RM200 rebate over 20 months (RM10 a month). The usage quota is 6gb and the speed is unlimited up to 10Mbps.

So what’s my take on it after using it for 1 week? I had used it at a few places, in Kajang town mostly where coverage is good and even at the edge of the coverage areas. Tip #1, the modem works best when placed upright rather than lying down. In my office when the modem is lying down on the table, the signal can become red but when placed upright on the wall of my cubicle, I get a green signal immediately. I have not achieved 10Mbps throughout my use but it managed to reach the highest of 3.59Mbps so far. However, even at lower than 1Mbps I have no problem with doing my usual things on my iPhone such as Facebooking, checking emails, uploading pics to Instagram and tweeting. Well, especially with uploading pics part coz with my 3g line, it can fail a few times before the pic can actually be uploaded. With the MF230 so far, it has not failed. Maybe because it’s 4G it’s different? To test the speed further, I also downloaded the Speedtest app.

I also tested usage further by watching Full length Youtube movies and it managed to stream fine without stopping or lagging. Lastly, I used it to upload all my pics to my Facebook album not one by one but uploading multiple pics using the Frippe app and although the Upload speed is supposed to be much slower than the download speed, I was still able to upload all 10 pics in under 4 minutes so it’s quite good.

I will be testing it further a couple more weeks and will write more about it in a second post.

Disclaimer: I was not paid for this review. However, I did receive the product for free to assist in my reviews. The opinions in this blog post are 100% mine.
