All the red in the new year

Usually, my graphic design sister, Creeart will do the decorations in the house for Chinese New Year. She normally comes out with some Cartoon character hand drawn, of the animal of the year, Rats for this year. However, since she’s in confinement, I had to do some kind of deco for the house. I’m not really creative in drawing fine arts and drawing from scratch, so all I did was download some cute Rats from Deviantart and print them. My eldest sister also bought those generic red and gold house deco from the shops. So I just simply stick them around the living room, with some red packets and hanging stuff.

Chinese people like to see a lot of red around the house to feel like it’s really in Chinese New Year Mood. There’s only one thing that I had to hand make. This lamp deco cut out from red cardboard. I got the idea from Parkson’s decoration. I really liked their idea so decided to make my own with some changes. Instead of hanging it from the ceiling, I just staple it together and let it hang from the ceiling lights.

I took a whole day 2 days to make the cut out, using just a pen knife. I’m sure the one in Parkson was machine made. I also made another cut out for the Saloon in my house, one of a Chinese Window lattice design, and stuck it to the top windows. Unfortunately, don’t have a pic of that right now. All the celebrating caused me to forget to take any pictures of it. I’m waiting for my sis back home to take some for me, coz that was really hard work. 😛

Pomelos are a must for Deco sake. Simply because the name in Chinese means ‘you have’, having enough I guess for every year.

Another fruit which makes its grand appearance all over the world is the Mandarin Orange.

It’s meaning in Chinese means Gold. That’s why Chinese people love to give it as gifts during this season and also decorate with it around the house. You would surely find at least a bowl of oranges in every home when you go visiting. Well, for me, I just like it for the colour. I might have eaten way too many oranges this time round.
