Quest for the Ipod Nano

I recently got really possessed by the quest to own the new Ipod, any model was fine. After days and hours of looking at reviews online, my appetite grew for more. Especially with the recent demise of my old U2, the JBL dock speaker sitting alone, empty and unused in the house, the quest had to be on with the recent new range of Ipods. I even tried getting my friend in US to courier over the Ipod Touch, but the thought of the customs here imposing huge fees turned me off the idea.

Basically, I was undecided at first which one to go for. Save money get a small capacity (4gb) or splurge more to get the bigger capacity. I made a visit to Machines Mid Valley on Thursday. This was only my 2nd time here after the first time I got my Ibook there, before the name became Machines. Can’t remember the previous name.

So I walked in and there weren’t a whole lot of people, there was a Introduction to Mac class going on, several people there. I scanned around for someone who’s free that I can talk to, but it seemed that all the Apple people were talking to some other customers. So I just browsed the products, though I really just want to look at the Ipod.

There weren’t many demo Ipods on display either. Finally, after a good ten minutes, I decided I needed to ask some questions. So I stole one of the Apple guys from another customer to ask him all the questions I have. I finally got my hands on a green Ipod Nano, fiddled with it and fell in love with it. It is SO thin he says you can hide it in your wallet, though I wasn’t quite sure that’s a bright idea. Anyhow, I was very confused whether to go with 4gb, 8gb or just get the Ipod Classic. I tried the Ipod Classic 80gb and it was so big on my palms. Save the capacity, nothing else really attracts me about it. I was definitely attracted to the Nano, the fatty as they call it. But really, it wasn’t fat when it sits perfectly on your palms.

I was really tempted to get it that night itself, but I can’t. I wanted to do a 0% 12 Months installment on my card, but only if I spend 1k above, and I knew my card can’t take another installment. So too bad.

I went back, and logged on to www.macclick.com You know, Macclick.com is actually the online shopping store for Apple products in Malaysia, the only one I suppose. It’s actually run by Pacific IT S/B which is the Apple reseller in Terengganu. Most importantly, they accept PAYPAL. Why isn’t there an Apple Online Store in Malaysia? So unfair. Aren’t we always left out? Blinded by my thoughts of getting the Ipod, I placed an order on Macclick.com. The total comes to a little more than getting it in a local store, but I get to use my Paypal funds! Meaning, the Ipod Nano becomes rather cheap in fact.

Ok so I placed the order on Thursday night. Today I got an email from the MD, Che Zaleha. Apparently the Apple reseller in Terengganu is out of stock of the Ipod Nano. Surprise surprise. Thank goodness, Zaleha is really sweet and is making her best effort to find one for me. Of course, it’s a non-working day right now in Terengganu, so distributors only start work maybe tomorrow. Looks like I have to wait a long time! I can’t wait any longer! Another funny thing about Malaysia being left out is, I was told that the RED products are not available here and even in Singapore. At Machines, I was told that if you want the RED product, they need to specially order it, and it’s totally not encouraged as parts of the proceeds go to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa., making Apple only getting a part of it. Therefore, they try not to sell it Horror. And then Zaleha tells me that Malaysia & Singapore is not listed to get it. Now, can’t Malaysians help by being a part of this fund? What was that preaching about choice?

You make choices every day, from the clothes you wear to the music you play. Now making a choice means making a difference.

Baffled….Coz Singapore Online Store seems to be selling it….hhhmmm

So now it’s waiting and waiting time. BAh..

Update 1
Today is Monday, the day I was supposed to receive the Nano. I emailed Zaleha early in the morning for any updates. Finally she told me she managed to get her hands on one, and it’s in Shah Alam. She gave me the options to collect it myself there in the warehouse or just let it be couriered to me by Tues. Of course, Kajang to Shah Alam is hardly even near, and after all, I’d paid the courier fees, haven’t I. I opted for it to be sent in.

Update 2
At about 3pm the same day, I received another email from Zaleha saying that I can’t receive it tomorrow due to the fasting month. Apparently, government offices close by 3pm and nobody is going to go send me my Nano. Did they just take 5 hours to realise they can’t send it out today? Beats me. So now I can only receive it Wed. I’m hardly beaming with excitement anymore, let’s just say I won’t be surprised to get another hold up. 5 days and counting…

  1. From what I know, MacAsia (1Utama) is only bringing in the iPod Touch in October. And the last visit I took to MacCity (Cineleisure) they had the iPod Nano in stock. So if you’re in PJ or KL, probably can venture to Mutiara Damansara to get it. 🙂

I’m still pondering…though hopefully I might have a really cool device to review and demo in a few days.

  2. Actually the nearest for me would have been Machines Mid valley which has stock too, or I could actually have gotten dealer price, I only ordered online so I can use Paypal and save the cash. Unfortunately, it’s taken longer than I expected :O
