Just heard news direct from Kuching that the 130 year old very exclusive Sarawak Club in Kuching has burnt down to ashes…with the only thing left now, the swimming pool.
“Poor old building” is my friend’s exclamation when I told him about it. While my sister says, she regrets having never taken pictures of the building. Sarawak Club has been the hangout place for many of those exclusive members for all those years. It’s got some nice facilities, the pool, the gym, the cafe, library etc etc. I remember having gone there a few times with my friend in high school whose dad was a member. Really cosy place. It had also been the venue for many many functions, company dinners, anniversaries etc.
Hey now it’s gone. Burnt down 3am on 27 July 2006. Anyone got any latest updates? Are they gonna rebuild it? What happens to those who have paid the hefty lifetime membership fees?

Omg, serious?? That’s big news! Now where will all the datuk’s kids go play squash? Haha, but yeah, that’s a shocker… Kuching is going to be so different when I get back…
Oh man….. it’s real. Just checked with my sis….. I suspect it’s arson cum terrorism. Definitely Osama.
Oh no!! I used to go there makan before… so sad to know it’s gone 🙁 i miss kuching
I spent two years going to makan almost every Sunday. We either used the pool or played golf or tennis. This was in 1965-1967. I guess the traditional “potty” I left at the bar is now gone too. What a shame!
Very upset to hear the news.My Sister and I lean’nt to swim there and were there most days after school and during school hols 1969-1976.
Its sad.. but dont worry.. the rebuilding is in process. Should be back for history in 1st quart 2007( as what i saw on the construction signboard )
Could you kindly give me the e-mail address of Harold Smith. He commented on the burning of the clubhouse at Kuching two years ago. I would like his e-mail or postal address.
Thank you.
