Once again, Punflay created an app that uses games to educate, and this time it is to teach Mathematics. When talking about Maths with pre-schoolers, it’s not just about counting but also about length, time, weight etc. The Measurement app for iPad has 5 types of games within it and this is the description from the iTunes store.

measurement 1

Crazy Clock: A friendly voice announces the time and all you do is to move the minute hand of a cute clock to set the correct time. Kids will get lots of practice learning to associate time with familiar activities in their day. Crazy Clock is a great introduction to the concept of time.

Scale Tale: This activity introduces kids to the concept of weight. An adorable one-eyed monster teaches kids this concept by holding two items and allowing them to guess which item is heavier or lighter. Is a pineapple heavier or lighter than a cup cake? Is a head of cabbage heavier or lighter than a strawberry? Familiar objects help kids learn the concept easily.

Fill Me Up: If you had to teach the concept of volume at home you are sure to have a mess all over the floor. Instead, Fill Me Up allows you to teach this concept through easy exercises such as filling pitchers with liquids or jars with cookies minus the mess.

Long and Short: Crayons, buses, park benches are all some of the familiar objects in a kid’s life. And these can be found in this activity as objects of comparison to learn the concept of length. This game presents two objects of different lengths. Simply tap on the one that is longer or shorter.

Action Months:This game introduces the basics of duration of time through a simple drag and drop activity to fill in the letters of the months. Kindergarteners can practice the names of the months and get ready for more sophisticated concept of time in higher grades.

Above is a video of Josiah trying out some of the games, he was not interested in ALL of it. In fact, he is most interested in Fill Me Up. He calls it the drip drip game and everytime he opens the app now, he only looks for that game and pretty much ignores the rest as they might be a little bit harder for him to grasp still at this age. Take note this app is really recommended for 5-6 year-olds and Josiah is only 3. In the video you’ll only get to see the 3 games, that is Crazy Clock, Scale Tale and Fill Me Up.

My utmost honest opinions
Crazy clock teaches my kid how to tell the time by moving the minute hand. Josiah has a few toy clock at home and he enjoys adjusting it to look like the real clock. He doesn’t yet know how to tell the time. So this app is nice for teaching him that, though it only can teach fixed timings, like Breakfast, Luncn and Dinner times. I guess that is good enough.

Scale Time game helps to teach Josiah the definition of heavier and lighter. I’m not sure a monster is used but maybe kids like monsters? Fill Me Up as I mentioned is Josiah’s favourite game, maybe this is because he loves pouring stuffs from one container to another in real life. Using this app is great coz it is not messy and I don’t have to waste any food stuffs yet he can learn counting and and it’s fun. I love the funny sounds the game makes. I think appropriate sound effects is so important to a game for kids coz it helps them to remember so much better.

Long and Short is just like Scale Time but this is about length instead of weight, Josiah is not that interested in this game so far, he hasn’t opened it himself after the first trial. The last app, Action Months is actually a spelling app. He’s also not that interested in it since he’s already learned his ABC, I guess the curiousity level is lower? It’s really just spelling the word for each month January to December, however, it’s not as colourful and animated. As in the alphabets are moving but they could be more attractive if they also have eyes, feet, mouths etc.

Measurement is really quite a good educational fun app. For me, an app is good as long as my kiddo actually looks for it on the iPad and plays with it more than once. This app is available at the iTunes App Store.

Disclaimer: I was not paid for this review. However, I did receive a copy of Measurement HD for my iPad review. The opinions in this blog post are 100% mine.
