Penang Hawker Food
Last month in June, we drove up to Penang for a friend’s wedding. It was only over the weekend, so it was pretty impossible to conquer all the Penang hawker food. The last time I was in Penang was nearly 10 years ago, so I could hardly remember what’s good to eat. Well, this time round, it was a memory refresher. Here’s some great foods I still miss… We reached there in time for dinner, so dinner was at a hawker place, I can’t remember the name now. ‘Oh Jien’ which is Fried Oyster in Egg, super oily and super delish. This can be found anywhere in Malaysia but in…

Sabah Local Food Day 2 – Yu Chap
On the second day after a very good rest at Tune Hotel, we fired up our 650cc Kancil and drove to town centre in search for local hawker food. Just the night before, John’s aunt asked us to try Yu Chap…a kind of fish dish, cooked in salted vege and bee hoon. The fish pieces are made up of parts of the fish. We walked around and around the shops around King Park Hotel, went to some wrong shops and finally found the shop selling this dish. <a href=”https://www.flickr.com/photos/leona/15261007203″ title=”P1250276 by Leona, on Flickr”> Kedai Kopi Sin Houng Kee! We were so excited to find it!…

It is situated in a new housing area ALAMESRA, apparently developed by a West Malaysian company. John’s aunt brought us there since it was only the shophouse in front of Tune Hotel, and she was staying nearby at Kingfisher. According to her, this restaurant is well known for the good food, but not well known to be cheap, in fact, they can be pretty cut throat at times. We ordered only 3 dishes for 2 persons, as she didn’t want to eat. First dish…

Pek Tin the Foochow Herbs
This packet of Chinese herbs is called Pek Tin Io or Ubat Pek Tin, which I got from Sarikei. You can get these any where there in the shops or drugs store. I love using herbs to add spice to my food. Don’t ask me what’s the picture of the deer doing there or what part it has in the medicine! I don’t know…anyway, this medicinal herbs is popular amongst the Foochow in Sarikei, they like to cook it with Kampung Chicken, chicken that grew up in the village he he. Supposedly this kind of chicken has more value, beats me again why. I can’t taste much difference in them,…
