Thanks to the the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra for another opportunity to encounter yet another magical experience.

I was very excited for this ballet festival especially because the theme is Armenian. I had never experienced other culture’s orchestra except the Western’s. This was my very first exposure. Honestly I did not know what to expect.

It began with Gayané , I would expect a lot of movement which was true, but the scene with the lovers’ searching for each other was just breathtaking. Performance by Razmik Marukyan mesmerised me and my friend, he translated heartbreak in his movement. We were very impressed.

We were most amazed by how a typical ballet dance move translated perfectly with the Armenian cultural dances. It was graceful, quirky and is absolutely light hearted. I really looked forward for more cross culture ballet in the future. Credits to Armen Grigoryan who was behind the choreography.

The orchestra performance was very interesting as well, again it was because of the Armenian music infused with the conventional orchestra instruments. Never knew the strings family could produce such interesting tune! Armenian conductor Karen Durgaryan really brought out the true spirit behind every piece of music.

Moving on to Spartacus. Although Gayané’s costumes were interesting I had to say I was fascinated by Spartacus’s costume designs. It was very apt for every character especially Aegina’s. It didportray the character very well especially her flashy, extravagant and vixen being.

The Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia was so tender and intimate I found myself holding my heart as I dwelt into their dance. The dancers were amazing with their expression through body language and face expression.

It was my friend Joyous’s first time watching the orchestra and it changed her mind forever that orchestra and ballet was boring.

She found it soulful and was transported to a part of the world she did not know was so gentle and passionate at the same time.
