Mama Kim cafe is located in Sojourn Guesthouse Pandan Indah, just next to Pandan Indah TM Point. I recently stayed and reviewed this 3-in-1 guesthouse with a cafe and facial spa that is all about channeling the goodness of nature. Therefore, Mama Kim is also all about health and natural ingredients yet food served here remains delicious and unique.
Mama Kim’s concept is all about 80% vegetarian and only 20% meat. I agree with her concept as I believe we humans eat too much meat, we should always eat more vege in our diet, Mama Kim is out to prove that vegetables doesn’t have to be tasteless and bland. Obviously, people in Pandan Indah knows that as there was a pretty long line of customers when I was dining there that Saturday evening. The food served here does not use MSG, white flour, refined sugar, preservatives and they also use less salt and only fresh ingredients.
Mama Kim is full air-conditioned and have lots of seating area, following their back to nature concept with a lot of wood and even a table that looks like a tree stump.
The most popular dish here is the well known Sauna Mee. The Sauna Mee meal is included with my room package, x2 for the family room as well as a glass of lemongrass juice. The Sauna Mee comes in two options, one being totally vegetarian and another containing butter fish.
We also get to opt for rice noodles, brown rice or pumpkin noodles. We had ours with pumpkin noodles for dinner and it was superb. Sauna mee is served in a superb simmering hot soup with a hot stone bowl that I was told was heated up to 250 Deg Celcius. The stone bowl is actually baked for over an hour, and then they put in the raw ingredients and pour the hot soup over and the ingredients get cooked within just a few minutes. Until the end of my meal, the soup was still very hot and it was continually bubbling and boiling. The soup they used was slowly boiled for over 5 hours, therefore making the soup really flavourful and sweet all on its own. The dish was also served with fried garlic and chili for those who need extra spice. This is definitely a must try dish for anyone visiting Mama Kim and the dish is really big, so it can be shared as well.
Since we were already dining there, we had to try their other amazing dishes. One of my fav is the Baked Cheesy Mushroom Rice RM13.70 which was a big hit with the kids even though it is purely vegetarian. Even I love it as well, as the melted cheese really flow into the rice and when mixed together, it was like east meet west. My kids ask for more and more of this even though they usually prefer noodles. I would definitely reorder this.
Next we had the Cantonese Seafood Noodles (RM15.80), it looked like there are so much vegetables on top of it. This noodle taste alike Wa Tan Hor, so kids really love it too. The taste is great even without MSG. The portion is also really large and we actually shared it amongst ourselves.
The Black Porridge (RM5.20 with vege or RM7.30 with fish) is a really homely and delicious porridge using seaweed, black fungus and some side condiments that when mixed together, create a burst of flavours in the mouth, really warms the body and soul. I actually loved it a lot.
The steamed rice set RM15.80Â is another hearty homely meal that is served with brown rice, chilli ‘tao chew’ chcken, herbal soup and vegetables. I really love the chicken in the dish as it was not that spicy and yet very tasty and fragrant.
Here in Klang Valley, it is not easy to find Pumpkin fried rice (RM9.40) so I was so happy that they have this in Mama Kim.
As for drinks, I truly recommend the Natural Fruit and Flower Tea (RM10.50). It comes with a bottle of hot water to refill it ourselves and a candle is always burning under the teapot to keep the tea hot. The tea infused with apples, oranges, and passionfruit, and it’s very citrusy and refreshing.
We also had vegetable juice (RM15.90) in a large jug and surprisingly even the kids were able to drink this. This should be awesome for digestion, we were truly having a great detox by feasting on the raw juice.
The family room package came with 3 breakfast vouchers, and the next morning, we returned to Mama Kim to try out the breakfast sets. I was pleasantly surprised that they even served American Breakfast and all sets come with hot drinks, for me I needed my morning coffee.
We also ordered the set of 10 grain juice for RM9.90 at the reception, and this alone was filling me up.
Mini Sauna Mee is part of the breakfast option, and it was so good that we had to order it again. It was exactly the same as the big one, but in a smaller hot pot.
I opt for the American breakfast and they use wholemeal bread as the sandwich, a nice and healthier alternative. Everything tasted great about this dish that Jordan ate more than half of it.
Josiah the noodle fan went with the Fried Mee Hun Set and I ordered Hot Milo for them too. The mee hun is slightly spicy and not oily at all, and he finished this dish all by himself.
If you’re looking for a healthier option for breakfast, lunch or dinner, then Mama Kim is a great choice, and definitely kid approved with their many types of dishes especially made for kids too.
