While foldable smartphones have been steadily popularizing over the past five years, a report from Canalys suggests that there are still a few key challenges for manufacturers to overcome, in order to be able to consider the form factor as part of mainstream adoption.
According to Canalys, for every 100 Android smartphones sold above US$800 globally, 19 of them were foldable devices. This 19% increase since 2019 can be attributed to a number of reasons, such as the premiumisation of the foldable devices with its cutting-edge technology, and the brand image associated with it.
Manufacturers have also sought to give consumers greater options by innovating key differentiating features in their foldables, such as its thickness, battery and screen sizes.
In 2019, the average thickness of a foldable smartphone was 15-17mm, while today, OPPO’s latest smartphone and the world’s thinnest foldable, the OPPO Find N5, measures in at just 8.93mm.
