Join a fun-filled musical splendour when the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) presents Family Fun Day concerts on Saturday, 24 September 2016 at 3.00 pm and Sunday, 25 September 2016 at 2.30 pm and 4.30 pm at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC.
Themed Carnival of the Animals and to be led by Graham Ross, the concerts will witness animals spring majestically to life with music; from a mischievous magpie, a magical swan, a frenzied bumblebee to a graceful pooch.
The showcases will open with Rossini’s The Thieving Magpie’s fun and frenetic overture, followed by Stravinsky’s Danse Infernale taken from ‘The Firebird’, a hugely successful ballet in 1910 based on a Russian fairytale. The music is later used in Disney’s ‘Fantasia’ (1999).
Flight of the Bumblebee is taken from Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera ‘The Tale of Tsar Saltan’ and was composed in 1899; the work tells of journey of an exiled prince who is turned into a bee so that he can see his father and bring justice to his kingdom.
Mussorgsky’s Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks is also included in the repertoire list; a work inspired by a costume sketch for the ballet ‘Trilby’. On the other hand, Gershwin’s Walking the Dog, taken from the 1937 comedy ‘Shall We Dance’, is a cheerful music that accompanies the two leads funny courtship on a cruise.
The Carnival of the Animals was composed by Saint-Saëns at a time where he was regarded as the most important French musician and one of the greatest French artists in any discipline. The work was originally conceived for a full symphony orchestra and composed for 14 separate movements (titled after some animals).
Come and be part of an enjoyable musical treat you and your family will never forget, only at DFP! The concerts are suitable for adults and also children aged 4 and above.
