What a privilege it was to attend ChildAid Asia held in Kuala Lumpur recently, and finding a gem of talents amongst the youth performing that day.

The kids get to enjoy the performances too! Josiah met Joey at the event in KLPac shortly before it started.

In short, ChildAid Asia is really a a platform for children to be able to showcase their talents, while at the same time also helping out other children who are unable to support their talents in music and performing arts. It is basically a concert for youth by youth, totally conducted by children and youth 18 and below yet bursting with talent unseen and unheard on the radio.
Millions of needy children live all around the world, many with hidden talents, a hidden song in their heart, an original piece lingering in their ears, yet they cannot afford musical education due to financial constraints, or the ability to develop their talents further. Yet we all know the arts and music is the seed of our soul, that is where ChildAid comes in combining charity and music in this humanitarian effort by talented youth around Asia, while raising funds for the children. Together with ChildAid Asia are The Smile Team, The Actors Studio and the Kiwanis Club of Damansara. The concert was also to benefit the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) with a special fund created for the treatment of cancer for underpriviledged children, as well as for a scholarship fund, which provides scholarship in high school, and ultimately a Performing Arts School for gifted and underprivileged youth.

The show opened majestically with the four well-known vocalists, Yumi Chung from Hong Kong, Christi Madrid from Philippines, Gabri Panlilio also from Philippines, and Zoe Hong from Malaysia. I was quite blown away by their powerful voices for their tender ages. The beautiful number was accompanied by the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth who played beautifully to the beat.

Melvyn Gnai, Malaysia’s own talented guitarist definitely stole the show. At only 14, he already looked established and professional from his unique finger skills to his confidence and poise. Definitely the one to watch out for that could pack stadiums worldwide.

Another pianist child prodigy has got to be Michael Anthony. Michael was actually on Indonesia’s Got Talent 2014!

Just check out his playing, without vision, yet he is able to play flawlessly whatever music he hears, focusing mostly on classical pieces. Michael is truly a gem and a joy to watch, gifted beyond words and plays directly from his soul. Only 13, I can hardly believe it, I believe however through ChildAid Asia, many more amazing children like him can be discovered, trained and given the opportunity and time on stage.

The concert took a 15 min recess and the orchestra was transformed into a Chinese Orchestra, with its members coming from around Malaysia, totaling 9 talented musicians from ages 14-20. I love Chinese orchestra, so graceful and cultural with a mystical touch.

Just watch their rendition of Jay Chou’s 菊花台 Chrysanthemum Flower Bed. Beautifully performed.

A lot more performances entailed entertained us to the last minute, with songs like Man in the Mirror and a Medley of Abba songs. A World To Imagine, these children did just that for us and so much more. Thanks to Irene and Kiwanis for the invite!

  1. This is a very nice endeavor. Unlocking the creativity of children by developing, not only gives them a chance to pursue and hone their talent, but also for some to be recognized and perhaps afford their families better lives. Harnessing the creative side also allows these children and teens to one day, be smart enough to find means for a better way of life too.

  2. Looks like a very nice event! I love how they involve children. They have huge potential, and they’re naturally motivated. So if you infuse fun and performances, they learn a lot faster. It also allows their families to spend time with them.

  3. I love this event as it molds the future of those talented kids by giving them the encouragement and confidence to do their craft in music. This is something I am frustrated with. I wish my parents have been more supportive with my dreams before. I used to sing and dance just like any other kids but got discouraged with negative comments from the elders. That’s why now, as a Momma, I promised myself and my little man that I will be supporting whatever his endavours will be. I’d like him to learn playing the piano though. But it wouldn’t matter if he doesn’t want so. I will not take it against him. hihi

  4. This is a perfect place for kids to showcase their talents and skills as well as learning to be more confident with their abilities. I would love for my son to be able to attend such events in the future. For now, he’s still 2 so he’s still learning to do the things that he love. 🙂

  5. Those kids are truly talented. And praises as well to the parents for being ever supportive of their kids. And lucky you for having witnessed the event and seen those young talents.

  6. Wow, those kids are very talented! It’s great that they help and support talented under privileged kids. I hope they continue with their advocacy and inspire more people in other countries.

  7. I used to participate in events like these growing up! I had my first piano recital at an event within a kids art festival; I was around 9 at the time. I remember enjoying the energy of the moment while I was on stage! These kids are fortunate to have this opportunity. It really is something special for a child to experience.

  8. They are such cuties! And really talented, too. I think events like this are amazing because they’re helping children on many different levels. You had a great opportunity to be able to attend something like this 🙂

  9. Truly creativity is for everyone no matter what. It’s nice to read about events like this. It just makes me feel so happy. I used to be part of recitals since it was like recognition day for our piano classes. Congrats to them! 🙂
