Christmas Menu at Flavours Cafe, Awana Hotel Genting

Christmas mood is in the air! Christmas deco is everywhere! Even at 3000 feet above sea level here in Awana Genting Highlands.

Flavours Cafe is located in Awana Genting Highlands, and this resort hotel is where guests would opt for a relaxing time away from the hustle and bustle of the City of Entertainment. Golfers come here to enjoy the beautiful cooling weather and a warm heated pool, or the highest golf course, all just about 15 min away from Genting Highlands.

Flavours Cafe ideally overlooks the poolside, and offers a wide array of food on their menu, from pastas to burgers to lamb shanks, and I was there to taste the specially created Christmas menu by their in-house Chef Rashid.

Flavours Cafe is also known for the open kitchen, where the chef actually prepares the food in front of diners and you can interact easily with Chef Rashid and enquire about the ingredients used while he works.

So much detail was put into the menu and table setting. I was super impressed, this being a casual dining cafe, yet the level of detail match a fine dining outlet. When choosing a place to dine, detail and great service are things I look out for besides just great food.

This special menu is only available for Christmas Eve Dinner on 24th December 2015, 6pm to 10.30pm and is priced at RM150 nett. The dinner set features a 4 course meal inclusive a glass of wine and party set.

APPETIZER
DSC00889
For appetizer, we had Salmon, Crab & Avocado Timbale Garlic, Pickle Ginger & Arugula With Olive Oil, Fresh Lemon Juice & Dijon Mustard Dressing.

Cured Salmon with Avocado can never go wrong. The salmon is cubed and carefully laid in a circle, topped with Avocado my favourite fruit, and shredded fresh crab meat and then topped with raw fresh Arugula. The verdict? Heavenly, the taste is scrumptious and slightly pepperish, with a burst of citrus from the marriage of the lemon juice and mustard. Mix it together with the sprinkled Olive oil, and crunchy specially picked Arugula leaves, this makes for a very tantalizing dish that makes you desire for more. I finished the dish and left not a single drop of olive oil on my plate.

SOUP
DSC00854
The second dish was the Leek & Spinach Soup, Creamy Duo Types of Soup. One might not expect how flavorsome leek and spinach can be when cooked together.

DSC00851
I heard from Chef Rashid that minimal ingredients were used for this soup, and he only added onion, garlic and cooking cream so that the original taste of leek and spinach remains. However, I must add that while it was simple, it was super delectable, I must learn how to cook this soup in order to make my children have more vegetables.

MAIN
DSC00864
For the mains, diners can choose either Roasted Turkey or Lamb Crown, Accompanied by Burned Brussels Sprout with Anchovies & Truffle Mashed Potatoes, Cranberries, Gilbert Gravy & Lamb Jus.

DSC00886

I always love Roasted Turkey for Christmas, it would feel incomplete without turkey so I am just pleased this is actually on the menu. If you are dining as a couple, choose one of each and share, that is what I’d do. I love that it is nicely proportioned, not too little not too much for a mains.

DSC00884

A slather of cranberry jam is dropped on the top of the turkey and the gravy is perfectly divine when matched with the roasted meat to give just the right flavour without covering the taste of the meat.

DSC00861

The Lamb Crown should not be missed! Served with mashed potatoes on the side, I love how soft the meat was when cutting it through. The lamb jus so sweet and indulgent with the tasted fantastic with brussels  sprouts.

DSC00888

The lamb was cooked medium well in my opinion and I love it that way, as the meat was still juicy and soft and I could taste the freshness of the lamb used.

DESSERT
DSC00874
Dessert being my favourite time of any meal was delightful with Chocolate Mousse and Cappuccino Ice-Cream in Shooter, both being my very favoured things. Chocolate Mousse was a simple jelly like choc flavoured pudding topped with a raspberry and a blackberry and a piece of white chocolate and some whipped cream. I liked that it was not very sweet and then there was the cappuccino ice cream which was made in-house, using real coffee.

DSC00865
To end the meal, diners could opt for either coffee or tea.

A perfect ending to a hearty meal.

Meet the man who cooked these dishes with love, Chef Rashid Hashim.
