A Look Back at P1 Nostalgic Nation Videos

IF you have followed me on Facebook, you would have seen all these videos I did for P1 Nostalgic Nation’s Contest. Well, I’m just looking back at all the experiences I had making this vids and I am so thankful to P1 for the opportunity to realise that I love making videos. Sure I make videos all the time but not these type. I only had 30 sec for each video so it was quite a challenge to try to come out with something interesting in such a short time. Let me bring you back to how each of the videos was made.

Week 1: #Foldaboat

Instructions:
Remember when you were in primary school and you first came across origami? What was the first thing you learned to fold? A paper crane? Do you remember paper boats? Are you ready to take on the 1st task in the #P1NostalgicNation competition
?

My Experience
I made this video in the very last minute before the deadline on Friday. I must admit that I had not given it much thought how it should go. I went home after work and I didn’t even have proper paper to fold the boats. I just tore the front pages from an old diary and started folding. It was as I was folding that I decided to make them into three different sizes. Basically the idea just came along as I was doing it, there was no storyboard in my head. I got Josiah involved as well, coz you know, kids love anything to do with water and boats. SO the hand you see in the video is Josiah’s and he was actually counting to every coin but of course, you can’t hear it over the music. Guess what, I won the weekly prize for this video, which was like a huge surprise for me. I will be going to watch Interstellar this Friday with my GSC Gold Tickets yeay!

Week 2: #Foldaplane

Instructions:
Do you remember the last time you folded a paper plane? With the right slim design to the get the best height and distance? What about taking it to the next level with wind flaps and a lightning bolt on the side? P1 challenges you to fold your best paper plane! Fold cut, snip and glue, as long as it flies, it’s up to you!

My Experience
For week 2, I started to put some thinking cap on. This was getting serious! I started to think along the lines of hopes, dreams, unity etc. That is why I made the planes of different colours and flew them in Kajang Stadium. Kajang Stadium is really a place of unity, diversity where all the folks of Kajang will gather for exercise, play football, enjoy a time of family bonding, fellowship etc regardless of colour or race. It’s really a place where people let loose and have fun and forget about judging others but embrace each other as we are. It helps that Kajang’s landmark Satay is just next door. Somebody I do my running there and the smell just kills me! The filming of this video was pretty fun, there were kids that wanted to pick up our airplanes and fly them too. Do kids nowadays still fly paper planes? I hope so. It was just a video I did intending to spark that spirit of unity in each one of us.

Week 3: #Makeafall

Instructions:
Do you remember that science class experiment where you had to drop an egg with a parachute to see if it would break? Well, we do! P1 challenges you to make a parachute, any material will do, the more creative the better! Attach something to it (try an elephant, we dare you) and drop it like it’s hot! Film it and send it our way!

My Experience
Wow this was toughy. I actually spent some time on youtube watching videos of how to make parachutes! IT was that serious. In the end, I decided to do something completely different, which I was quite sure nobody would do. I would draw and animate people falling down with parachutes on. Josiah my little artist did the background drawing for me, the grass, the clouds, the sun. We had quite a lot of fun doing this one, drawing, painting and arranging the little people. I actually liked to draw and animate my cartoons when I was little, I’d draw on the edges of books and then flip them and watch them move. These days, we have technology to help us. I was quite pleased with it, all done using iPad and iPhone camera only as I didn’t have those nice pro cameras for filming. The message I wanted to bring across was, there’s always another way, in all things you do when you face road blocks, find another way.

All in all, I had a great time the last 3 weeks preparing for these videos. I really want to thank P1 for this really fun contest, not to mention the fantabulous prizes aka Macbook Air! It was definitely nostalgic doing all these things that we haven’t done since we were kids. Results will be out by Nov 14th and I can’t wait for it.
