Josiah’s artwork, a set on Flickr.

I remember drawing a lot when I was young, but I was not particularly gifted in it, my sister was though. She went on to become a graphic designer. Nevertheless, I used to love drawing and we would draw even on the wall in our old house. When I was in high school, I did do quite well in art and so I dropped Biology in Form 6 for Art, and took back home the best student trophy for the two years I was there. Maybe there was a lack of ambition or something, I never really did go into the Artistic field of study or work. My parents definitely never bought me an art set or even paper for drawing etc. When Josiah was little, art sets would probably be the first thing I got for him, much to the dismay of the father, as you know, it can get rather messy. Josiah starting drawing before he could hold a pencil, started painting before he could write. For me, it was all just for fun, a way for him to express himself. His earlier artwork can be considered ‘abstract art’ as they were just splurges of paint here and there, but I noticed that he loves drawing and painting. It is just something he was willing to spend hours sitting down doing. We then got him those magnetic drawing boards, and that was all he needed to sit still .

This year 2013, was kinda like his breakthrough. At only 4, he already have his own art style, and I am simply amazed at his imagination, his detail and speed. Just over last weekend, he produced over 30 pieces of ink art. We used to never keep his artwork, and just let him draw on his chalk board. This year, I started documenting his work by taking pictures and keeping the physical copies. I posted his scanned art online on Flickr and Facebook and later this year, I created a Facebook Page as his online gallery. That has worked the best so far and to date he has over 200 followers made up of our friends and families and even some strangers.

Well, I have no idea where this will lead, but Art is really a great way for kids to have fun, express themselves, to build their confidence etc.
