MiTV anyone?

mitv VS astro

Anyone putting money down to subscribe the new Pay TV MiTV? Its decoders are already available on the market as of today. MiTV is supposed to be the ultimate rival of Astro . We had dreamed of MiTV killing the Astro monopoly of Pay TV so that pricing can become more affordable for the poor tv addicts. However, the MiTV decoder alone is priced at a whooping RM1188! That’s like 10 time more expensive than Astro’s decoder! They’ve gotta be kidding rite?

A statement issued at MiTV’s launch yesterday said the decoder, which is called an Interactive Multimedia Terminal Setop Box (STB), is priced at RM1,188. This does not include the cost of installing an ultra-high frequency (UHF) antenna if the subscriber does not have one.

The monthly subscription for the service, which will be on a prepaid basis, is RM68. MiTV Corporation Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Rosman Ridzwan said the station would start with 39 channels.

“We hope to have 50 channels in a very short time,” he said.-The Star 6 Sept 2005

Check out the website and see what’s so interesting about the 39 channels they currently have. If you don’t exactly have money flowing out of your pocket, but yet you’re thinking of subscribing to MiTV just because you wanna save on your monthly fee that’s a little cheaper than Astro’s, think again. The current channels on MiTV are very sad and pathetic. I used to watch those channels when I was back in Kuching, you know, coz Kuching is like the Land of Satellite dishes. We’ve all got one huge satellite sitting on our lawn, and we get to watch channels around the globe for free. So, those channels on MiTV were mostly available on free satellite TV, unlike the ones on Astro, which we could never get. Therefore, I can tell you, those channels are not as interesting as it seemed on the website, they are pretty sad most of the time. There isn’t even a proper movie channel, no sports channel, no cool music channel. Believe me, MTV India and Indonesia and Mandarin just ain’t like the real MTV. :O The only channel that I’d probably like to watch is KBS.

I don’t know what the MiTV people are thinking, but they better lower down the price of their decoders, and start seeking better channels before their targetted 100,000 viewers in one year can be achieved.

  1. I think its a done deal. They will shut down before they can even start. It’s ridiculous. Pay more for less? It’s either they have not done their market research, or are too blind to see reality. Too much TV perhaps?

Besides, do we really need another cable network?

  2. Man, the program listing is pathetic. Crazy price for a decoder. And for what? Lame channels? haha. Man, even their website looks low budget. Difficult to navigate too. Just lame. And it looks like they aren’t Astro’s ‘rival’ as everyone hoped. Looks to me like they won’t be competing with astro. im sure after a while, it’ll revert to good-old-fashion collusion. lower prices? dream on. Maybe if a real pay-tv network is set up in malaysia we’ll be able to see some real competition, not some lamer with a half-thought out plan.

my god. fix the lame website, mitv. looks so lame. looks like those unappealing websites common in the early 90s, when the net started to flourish.
