For the past month, my office computer was acting up. After installing a new DVD Writer, and maybe because I had a really buggy Windows not formatted in a while, everytime I put in a CD or DVD, well, everytime the DVD Drive closes, the Computer would restart immediately within 2 seconds. I was unable to use the DVD drive for sometime, as I wait to bring my PC for service. However, the other day I had loads of CDs to burn, so I had to find a temporary solution.
First thing I did, was to find out what was the exact problem, whether it was hardware or driver, or windows. So I did this:
Right click on My Computer and select properties.
Click Advanced tab.
Click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Under System Failure uncheck Automatically Restart.
Click OK.
This was to find out through the Blue Screen code, before it restarts, what the problem was. So I got this Blue screen.
The code showed STOP: 0×0000008E (0xC0000005, 0×806EE753, 0xB7963E48, 0×00000000 )
A whole lot of Zeroes which I’d love to find on a cheque with my name. Anyways, it showed some kind of driver problem. But the blue screen would continue to appear everytime I put in a CD, or a blank CD to burn. I needed to get a temporary solution to stop that. So I did the unthinkable, mess with the Registry! Solution is from here.
Click Start, Run, type Regedit, click OK.
Locate this Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetContro lClass
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the data values.
Exit Registry and RebootClick Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any files are damaged or missing, they’ll be replaced from your Win XP CD. You may need to reboot afterwards so damaged files will be replaced.
Ok so it worked for a while. I was able to burn 3-5 CDs each other before it mysteriously hangs and cannot even be restarted. It needed to be reset. Quite frustrating as that day I had to burn nearly 50 Cds. Anyways, I found that the problem gets worse each time I reset. It’s like some error code was written into the Registry. So I downloaded Registry Mechanic as recommended by a friend. I found over 900+ errors after the scan. Ok, so after doing that part, the problem lessen. Once a while it still happened, what to do, it’s a Windows machine after all. 🙂
