Would this be my last full Chinese New Year celebrations in Kuching? I definitely had a lot of fun with my family and meeting up with a few friends, much less than last year though. As usual, way before the clock strikes twelve, the whole city of Kuching is already lighted up with fireworks, and the deafening sounds of firecrackers and the array blasted away, getting louder as it gets nearer to midnight.
After having a hefty dinner at my mum’s friend’s restaurant at Swan Teem, I was ready to retire for bed. Lying away on the couch I was really sleepy, everyone was out, my parents were out, and there I was napping away at the supposed most exciting hour for the Chinese. Anyways, I had to awake as it was distracting and sat up to watch some amazing fireworks display through the window. This year, I wasn’t in any mood to snap fireworks pics. So just watched a bit and then off to bed… who believes there’s a ban?
The next morning my eldest sis came with a long strand of firecrackers. They hung it over the roof, and lighted it up.
Some visitors had already come and the kids were excited to watch us light up the fire crackers. It was loud and fun to just watch the pollution for a while, but after that it really got into my lungs and I could hardly breath. I had to run into my parents’ room to take a deep breath of oxygen. If Kuchingites continue to ignore the ban and play firecrackers of this sort, I can’t imagine what the air quality will be like another few year’s time.
Well, most of the visitors are my parents’ hang out buddies. They sure know how to party and have lots of fun.
